You are here: Experience and Enjoy > Active > Outdoor Adventures
Mid Wales has the landscape for proper outdoor adventure without the crowds that come with more famous destinations. The Cardigan Bay coastline, the Cambrian Mountains, the forests of Ceredigion and the hills of Powys and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) all offer activities that get you properly outside and properly tired.
Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are popular along the Ceredigion coast in summer. Guided trips run from New Quay and Aberystwyth, paddling past sea cliffs, caves and beaches that are only accessible from the water. You might see dolphins, seals and seabirds.
Coasteering combines cliff jumping, swimming and scrambling along the rocky coast. Several operators offer sessions on the Ceredigion coast, suitable for beginners and families as well as those looking for bigger jumps. Rivers in Powys offer white water kayaking and gorge walking, with the Wye and its tributaries providing good runs after rain.
Mountain biking at Nant yr Arian near Aberystwyth is the main draw, with red and black graded trails through Sitka spruce forest. The trails are well maintained, with purpose-built singletrack, berms and drops. There is a cafe at the top and red kite feeding in the afternoons.
Road cyclists have quiet lanes through the Cambrian Mountains and the Elan Valley, with long climbs and empty roads. The Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth is a flat, traffic-free route along the estuary, suitable for families on hybrid bikes.
Walking ranges from coastal path sections to mountain days on Cadair Idris and Plynlimon. The less well-known routes, like the ridges above the Elan Valley or the quiet lanes of Radnorshire, are where Mid Wales walking is at its best.
Horse riding and pony trekking are available across the region, with several centres in the Brecon Beacons and Powys offering rides through open hill country. Some offer half-day or full-day rides across moorland and through valleys.
This is not adventure on an industrial scale. There are no queues, no wristbands and no artificial obstacles. The adventure here comes from the landscape itself, and there is plenty of it.
