Local Produce in Mid Wales | Welsh Food and Drink

The food in Mid Wales comes from the land around it. Welsh lamb from the Cambrian Mountains, beef from Powys farms, cheese from small dairies in Ceredigion, and honey from hives in the Brecon Beacons. This is not a region that needs to import its flavour. It grows here, and you can taste it in farm shops, markets and on pub menus across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Snowdonia.

Welsh Lamb and Beef

Mid Wales is sheep country. The lamb here is reared on open hill land, which gives it a distinct taste that has earned Protected Geographical Indication status. Beef cattle graze the lower valleys across Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire. Both are available from farm shops and butchers in market towns like Llanidloes, Builth Wells and Lampeter.

Cheese, Dairy and Preserves

Small-scale producers across the region make cheeses, yoghurts and butter that you will not find in supermarkets. Caws Cenarth near Newcastle Emlyn has been making cheese for generations. Look out for local honey from Brecon Beacons beekeepers and fruit preserves from smallholdings in the Teifi valley. Farm shop shelves tell you what the season is better than any calendar.

Drink

Craft brewing and small-batch distilling have taken hold across Mid Wales. Monty's Brewery in Montgomeryshire produces ales using local water and hops. Dyfi Distillery near Machynlleth makes gin from foraged Welsh botanicals. In Ceredigion, local cider makers press apples from old orchards that have been here for decades.

Where to Find It

Weekly markets in Brecon, Cardigan, Llanidloes and Aberystwyth sell directly from producers. Ultracomida in Aberystwyth stocks both Welsh and Mediterranean produce. Farm shops are scattered along main routes and country lanes. Many farms also sell direct, especially eggs, meat and seasonal vegetables. Ask locally and you will usually be pointed in the right direction.

Where to Find Local Produce

Farm shops across Powys sell direct from the people who rear, grow and make the food. Weekly farmers markets in Brecon, Aberystwyth, Builth Wells and Machynlleth are the best places to buy seasonal produce and talk to the producers face to face.

Delis and independent food shops in the market towns stock local cheeses, cured meats, preserves and baked goods. Several breweries and distilleries in the region offer tours and tastings, and a growing number of vineyards are producing Welsh wine worth trying.

What to Look For

Welsh lamb and beef are the obvious starting points. Saltmarsh lamb from the coast has a distinctive flavour. Look out for Perl Wen and Perl Las cheeses from Caws Cenarth in the Teifi valley, Brecon Brewing ales, and gin from distillers who use local botanicals. Honey from Cambrian Mountain hives and preserves made from hedgerow fruit are good things to take home.
