Christmas Markets and Festive Fairs in Mid Wales

Christmas markets and festive fairs in Mid Wales are small, local and full of things made nearby. From late November to just before Christmas, market towns and country houses across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) hold fairs with food, crafts, music and lights. Here are the dates we know for 2026.

What's on in 2026

Hay Festival Winter Weekend, 26 to 29 November. Talks, readings and music in the grounds of Hay Castle, in a town with more bookshops than you'll get round in a day. See Hay Festival Winter Weekend.

Christmas Fair at Cardigan Castle, 28 November. A festive fair at the castle on the Teifi, at the southern end of the Ceredigion coast.

Royal Welsh Winter Fair, 30 November and 1 December. Two days of prize livestock, a Welsh food hall and trade stands at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. See Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

Christmas weekends at Llanerchaeron, 5 and 6, 12 and 13, and 19 and 20 December. The Georgian villa and farm estate in the Aeron valley near Aberaeron dresses up for Christmas at weekends.

Brecon Farmers and Makers Market, 14 November and 12 December. Local food and crafts in Brecon, a good place for Christmas food shopping.

Christmas in the market towns

Many towns across Mid Wales switch on their Christmas lights in late November and hold late-night shopping evenings or Christmas fairs in early December, including Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, Welshpool, Llanidloes, Llandrindod Wells and Dolgellau. Dates are usually announced in the autumn, so check our what's on listings nearer the time.

What will I find at a Mid Wales Christmas market?

Expect Welsh cheese, meat, bread, chocolate and drinks, alongside wool, pottery, wood, prints and cards by local makers. There's usually hot food, mulled drinks and sometimes a brass band or choir. Stalls are often run by the people who made what's on them, so ask questions. See our Christmas gift shopping guide for shops open all season.

Good to know

Parking fills up early on fair days, so arrive in the morning or use the train where you can. The Heart of Wales Line stops at Builth Road for the Winter Fair. Bring cash for smaller stalls, and a bag or two.
