You are here: Plan & Inspire > Itineraries > Rail Trail Itineraries
Mid Wales has some of the finest railway journeys in Britain, and they are not museum pieces or tourist trains. These are working lines that connect real communities, running through landscapes that most people never see from a car window. Travelling by train here is slower, quieter and better.
Three main lines cross the region. The Heart of Wales Line runs 121 miles from Shrewsbury to Llanelli, stopping at Knighton, Llandrindod Wells, Llanwrtyd Wells and Sugar Loaf halt (the highest station on the line at 820 feet). It takes around four hours end to end, passing through river valleys, sheep-grazed uplands and the kind of countryside that makes you put your phone away.
The Cambrian Line connects Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth, passing through Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth. From Machynlleth, the Cambrian Coast Line continues north to Barmouth, crossing the famous wooden viaduct over the Mawddach Estuary, then on to Harlech and Pwllheli.
Absolutely. Many accommodation providers are within walking distance of stations, and local bus routes connect smaller villages to the rail network. You can base yourself in Llandrindod Wells and walk the hills around the Elan Valley. Or stay in Aberystwyth and take day trips along the coast to Borth and up to Barmouth.
The Explore Wales pass and Heart of Wales Line rail rover tickets offer flexible travel at reasonable prices. Bikes are carried free on most services, though space is limited and booking ahead helps.
On the Heart of Wales Line: the Tywi Valley, Cynghordy Viaduct, Sugar Loaf tunnel, and miles of open moorland where buzzards ride the thermals. On the Cambrian Line: the Severn Valley, Dyfi estuary and the view into Aberystwyth as the train rounds the final headland. On the coast line: Barmouth Bridge, the Mawddach Estuary, and Harlech Castle on its clifftop above the dunes.
Bring a window seat. You will not regret it.
Individual tickets for the Cambrian and Heart of Wales lines can be bought at stations or online through Transport for Wales. Day explorer tickets offer good value if you plan to hop on and off at multiple stops. The trains are not frequent, so check return times before you set off on a walk. For planning your rail journey and checking connections, visit the train and bus stations page.
Look for accommodation near the railway to make the most of a rail-based trip to Mid Wales.
