Cycling in Mid Wales

Mid Wales is one of the best places to ride a bike in Britain. The roads are quiet, the hills are real, and the mountain biking trails in the forests are world-class. Whether you want gentle family cycling along riverside paths or full-day mountain bike adventures, it is all here.

Mountain Biking

Nant yr Arian, near Aberystwyth, has purpose-built mountain biking trails through the forest, from blue-graded routes for intermediates to black runs with technical sections. The cafe at the visitor centre overlooks a lake where red kites come to feed. Coed y Brenin near Dolgellau is one of the original trail centres in Wales with routes from family-friendly to expert level.

Road Cycling

The quiet lanes of Radnorshire and the Cambrian Mountains are superb for road cycling. Traffic is light, the scenery changes with every hill, and you can ride for hours on single-track roads without seeing a car. The Elan Valley loop from Rhayader is a classic route past the reservoirs.

Family Cycling

The Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth follows the old railway line along the estuary. It is flat, traffic-free and scenic. The Elan Valley trail from Rhayader follows the reservoirs on quiet roads. The Montgomery Canal towpath offers flat, easy riding near Welshpool.
