Dolgellau is the main town here, a solid market town of grey stone at the foot of Cadair Idris. From there, the Mawddach Trail follows the old railway line to Barmouth along the estuary, one of the best easy walks in Wales. Harlech has its castle and views north to the Llŷn Peninsula. Tywyn and the Talyllyn Railway are within easy reach. Accommodation ranges from farmhouse B&Bs above the estuary to self catering cottages in the hills, with a few good hotels in the towns.
