Twixmas Breaks in Mid Wales

Twixmas is the quiet week between Christmas and New Year, from 26 December to 1 January, when the presents are open, the leftovers are running out and everyone could do with some fresh air. A short break in Mid Wales is a good way to spend it: walks from the door, a pub with the fire lit and nothing you have to do.

Why take a Twixmas break in Mid Wales?

Because it's quiet. Across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) the roads are empty, the paths are yours and the days are for walking and the evenings for sitting by the fire. It's also a good time to use gift vouchers, and places that are full over Christmas sometimes have last nights free before New Year.

Winter walks to clear your head

Walk the reservoirs of the Elan Valley near Rhayader, the Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth, or a stretch of the Ceredigion Coast Path near New Quay. For something bigger, Cadair Idris in Southern Eryri on a frosty day is hard to beat, with the right kit. See winter walks.

Cosy pubs and good food

Country pubs are glad of the custom in the days after Christmas, and it's often easier to get a table than in the run-up. Book ahead for New Year's Eve. See Christmas dining.

Dark skies on the longest nights

Late December has the longest nights of the year. On a clear night in the Elan Valley or Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), you can see Orion, the Pleiades and thousands of stars with your own eyes. See stargazing in Mid Wales.

Family time without the pressure

Children still on holiday? Some steam railways and attractions open between Christmas and New Year, so check before you go. A beach walk, a forest trail and a hot chocolate often do the job just as well.

Is there last-minute availability between Christmas and New Year?

Often, yes, especially for two or three nights from 27 December. The places to stay listed on this page are across Mid Wales, and our last minute breaks page is worth a look. Check your dates soon, as New Year's Eve itself books up early.

Is Twixmas a good time for a short break?

Yes. Many people are off work, the roads are quiet after Christmas, and two or three nights away is enough to feel refreshed before the New Year.
