Pubs Worth Planning Your Day Around

The pubs in Mid Wales are reason enough to visit. Not gastropubs with pretensions, but proper pubs where the fire is lit, the locals are friendly, and the beer is kept well. Many serve food that goes beyond the usual, using local lamb, Welsh beef and cheeses from the surrounding farms.

What Makes a Mid Wales Pub Different?

These are community pubs. In many small towns and villages, the pub is the social centre, the meeting place, the spot where walkers refuel and farmers wind down. They tend to be independently run, which means each one has its own character. Some have slate floors and beams. Others have been modernised with good taste. A few have barely changed in decades.

Real Ale and Local Brewing

Mid Wales has a growing craft brewing scene. Monty's Brewery in Montgomery, Evan Evans in Llandeilo, and several microbreweries across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Snowdonia supply local pubs with cask ales that you will not find elsewhere. Ask what is local and you will usually get a decent recommendation.

Dog Friendly Pubs

Most pubs in rural Mid Wales welcome dogs, at least in the bar area. Some have dog bowls and treats behind the counter. It is part of the culture here.
