Dark Skies Accommodation

Mid Wales has some of the darkest skies in Britain. The Elan Valley near Rhayader is a designated Dark Sky Park. The Brecon Beacons hold International Dark Sky Reserve status. And the Cambrian Mountains, with almost nobody living in them, are darker still.

What this means in practice: on a clear night from a cottage doorstep near Tregaron, you can see the Milky Way with your bare eyes. From a B&B garden above the Elan Valley, you can watch satellites crossing overhead. From a campsite in the Beacons, the sky looks completely different from anything you see at home.

The properties listed here are in areas with low light pollution. Some provide stargazing guides, telescopes, or tips on where to go for the best views. Others simply happen to be in a very dark place, which is enough.

The best stargazing months are October to March, when the nights are longer and the air tends to be clearer. But even in summer, after 11pm, the skies over the Cambrian Mountains are worth staying up for. The Elan Valley has regular stargazing events, and Brecon Beacons National Park runs astronomy evenings through the autumn and winter.

If dark skies matter to you, look for accommodation in the Elan Valley, around Rhayader, Tregaron, Llanwrtyd Wells, or in the hills between Machynlleth and Llanidloes. These are among the darkest places in Wales.
