What to Do When It Rains in Mid Wales

It rains in Mid Wales. Quite a lot, actually, which is why everything is so green. The good news is there are plenty of places to go when the weather closes in, and some of them are better on a rainy day than a sunny one.

Museums and Heritage

The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth has free exhibitions, a world-class collection, and a cafe with views across the town. Aberystwyth Arts Centre hosts exhibitions, cinema and theatre. The Judge's Lodging in Presteigne is a fascinating Victorian courtroom and judge's apartments, interactive and absorbing. The Robert Owen Museum in Newtown tells the story of the social reformer born in the town.

Craft and Making

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth has indoor exhibitions on sustainability, renewable energy and green living. It is educational without being preachy and good for families. Corris Craft Centre, also near Machynlleth, has workshops where you can watch craftspeople at work and try your hand at chocolate making or candle dipping.

Family Indoor Activities

Swimming pools in Brecon, Aberystwyth, Newtown and Llandrindod Wells are lifesavers on wet days with children. MOMA Machynlleth has art exhibitions in a converted chapel. On really wet days, a country pub with a log fire and a board game is a perfectly valid activity in Mid Wales.
