Black Mountain Adventure offers professionally guided mountain biking sessions in the spectacular landscapes of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park, providing visitors to Mid Wales with an exciting and well-supported off-road cycling experience.

Taking place across natural trails, forest tracks and open hillside terrain, these guided sessions are designed to be inclusive, confidence-building and enjoyable, whether you’re trying mountain biking for the first time or looking to develop your off-road skills. With expert instruction, bike hire included and routes tailored to ability, Black Mountain Adventure is a popular choice for families, groups and visitors seeking outdoor adventure in Wales.


A Guided Mountain Biking Experience

Mountain biking sessions typically last 2–3 hours and are delivered as either a morning or afternoon experience, allowing visitors to plan their day around other activities in the Brecon Beacons and wider Mid Wales area.

All sessions are fully guided, with experienced instructors selecting routes and terrain to suit the ability and confidence of the group. Riders will experience a mix of climbs, descents and flowing trail sections, with time to stop, learn skills and enjoy the surrounding scenery.


Who It’s Suitable For

  • Minimum age: 12 years
    (Children must be accompanied by an adult)

  • Suitable for beginners through to more confident riders

  • Ideal for families, adults, school groups and corporate groups

  • A minimum of four participants is required for a session to run

Sessions are adapted to suit group ability, ensuring a supportive and enjoyable experience for everyone taking part.


Bikes, Equipment and Instruction

Mountain biking sessions include the use of quality mountain bikes and safety equipment, so visitors do not need to bring their own bikes. Instruction is provided throughout the session, covering bike handling, braking, climbing and descending techniques, helping riders build confidence on varied terrain.

This makes the experience particularly accessible for visitors to Mid Wales who may not have specialist cycling equipment with them.

  • Activity location: Black Mountain Adventure Centre, Three Cocks, Brecon, LD3 0SD

  • Session options:

    • Morning session: approximately 9:15am – 12:30pm

    • Afternoon session: approximately 1:15pm – 4:30pm

  • Finishing times may vary depending on group size

  • Visitors are asked to arrive at the Adventure Centre at the specified session time to check in


What to Wear and Bring

All mountain biking sessions take place outdoors, and conditions can be wet, cold or muddy at any time of year. Visitors are advised to wear:

  • Warm, comfortable athletic clothing

  • Hiking boots or sturdy trainers

  • Waterproof jacket and layers

  • Hat, jacket and sunscreen during warmer months

Dressing appropriately for outdoor conditions will ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Road Directions

Black Mountain Adventure is located in the the village of Three Cocks, Powys. The centre is 6 miles South West of Hay on Wye on the A438

Directions from the M4: Exit at Juction 24, travel North on the A449 to Raglan, Take the A40 West to Abergavenny, continue through Crickhowell 2 miles passed the village, turn right after the Cider Mill Pub onto the A479 to Talgarth. Once in Talgarth turn left in the square sign posted for Brecon then take the first main turning for Hay on Wye on the A4078. Black Mountain Activities is opposite the next junction in the direction of Hereford.

The nearest railway station is Abergavenny, which is 23 miles away.
