Eco Holidays and Green Tourism in Mid Wales

Mid Wales has been doing sustainable tourism before it had a name. The Centre for Alternative Technology opened near Machynlleth in 1973. The Dyfi Biosphere was designated by UNESCO. Organic farming, renewable energy and low-impact living are part of the fabric here, not marketing add-ons.

What makes Mid Wales a good eco holiday destination?

Start with the basics: clean air, clean water, dark skies, low traffic and a landscape that has not been industrialised. The population density is among the lowest in England and Wales. The rivers are clean enough for wild swimming. Red kites, which were once reduced to a handful of breeding pairs, now number in the hundreds across the Cambrian Mountains.

Many accommodation providers in the region have invested in sustainability measures: solar panels, biomass boilers, rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging points and locally sourced materials. Several properties have been built specifically as eco-lodges or low-impact holiday homes, using natural materials and off-grid energy systems.

Can I travel to Mid Wales sustainably?

The Cambrian Line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the Heart of Wales Line through Llandrindod Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells provide rail access to the region. Once here, local bus routes connect the main towns, and e-bike hire is available in several locations. The rail trail itineraries show how to build a car-free holiday around the train network.

What eco activities are available?

The Centre for Alternative Technology has interactive exhibits on renewable energy, sustainable building and ecology. Cors Dyfi nature reserve near Machynlleth has the Dyfi Osprey Project. Gilfach Nature Reserve near Rhayader offers guided walks through ancient woodland. Foraging courses, wild swimming sessions and conservation volunteering opportunities run throughout the year with local providers.
