Brecon
Details
The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal is often voted Britain's prettiest canal. Much of it runs through the Brecon Beacons National Park and follows the line of the lovely, wooded Usk Valley. Brecon Canal Basin is a great place to start your journey, with lovely walks along the canal.
Brecon Canal Basin is at the northern extent of the navigable section of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, right in the heart of Brecon. The canal towpath offers walkers a gentle walking experience through some very pretty countryside and enjoy the waterside wildlife.
There is a car park at Brecon Canal Basin and a well-surfaced tow path along the canal. Follw this for 3 miles and you reach the first lock at Brynich where you will find a life size sculpture of a man with his horse drawn tram which depicts the history of this section of the canal. Expect to see water birds including ducks, herons and kingfishers and when you reach Brynich you may see narrow boats navigate the small lock.
There are picnic tables at the side of the lock and additional ones just a few hundred metres away on the other side of the lane. Looking down river from the bridge you can see Brynich Aqueduct crossing the Usk.
