About
These days, the 'Potato Picking Week' are a welcome couple of weeks off school, but in Wales for schoolchildren in the past it meant hard labour during the potato harvest.
In the days before machinery, Potato howking by hand was tiresome and back-breaking work – and children were cheap labour.
Many will have happy memories of being out in the fields of Wales picking Potatoes in the autumn sun and capering with their classmates.
Others will remember perishing October days where the ground was frozen solid, the wind was bitterly cold and hands would be sore.
