Royal Welsh Winter Fair

The Royal Welsh Winter Fair is a two-day agricultural fair at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, in the heart of Powys. In 2026 it runs on Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December. It's organised by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, the same people behind the Royal Welsh Show in July, and it's one of the biggest dates in the Mid Wales calendar.

Where the summer show is all about scale, the Winter Fair feels more like a farming community getting together before Christmas. Farmers bring their best prime stock to be judged, the food hall is full of Welsh producers, and plenty of people come for the Christmas shopping.

What to expect at the Winter Fair

There are hundreds of competitions over the two days, with cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry judged in the halls and rings, and the champions decided in front of packed stands. You don't need to know a Texel from a Welsh Mountain to enjoy it. Sit in for the judging just to see how much it matters to the people in the ring.

The Food Hall is where many visitors spend most of their time, with Welsh cheese, meat, bread, drinks and chocolate to taste and take home. Trade stands and craft stalls sell gifts, country clothing and decorations, so you can make a good start on Christmas. For the programme and tickets, see the Royal Welsh Winter Fair listing.

Getting to the showground

The showground is at Llanelwedd, on the edge of Builth Wells (postcode LD2 3SY), where the A470 and A483 meet. Expect queues on the approach roads first thing in the morning. Builth Road station on the Heart of Wales Line is a short taxi ride away, with trains from Shrewsbury, Knighton and Llandrindod Wells to the north and Llanwrtyd Wells to the south.

Wear warm, waterproof layers and boots you don't mind getting muddy. The halls are covered, but you'll walk between them in whatever the weather is doing at the end of November.

Where to stay for the Winter Fair

Places to stay around Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader fill quickly for Winter Fair week, as they do for the summer show, so book as early as you can. Farm B&Bs, country inns and self-catering cottages across Central Powys are all within a short drive. Browse places to stay in Central Powys, or widen your search to Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), which is about half an hour south.

Make a few days of it

Stay on after the fair and you're well placed for the Elan Valley, just beyond Rhayader to the north, where the reservoirs and dams look their best on a cold, clear day. The red kites at Gigrin Farm near Rhayader are fed every day at 2pm in winter. Hay-on-Wye and its bookshops are a short drive east. For more ideas, see our autumn food and drink guide.
