About

Llanfair Slate Caverns is an underground visitor attraction where you can take a self-guided walk through nine man-made caverns, shaped by Welsh slate mining over 100 years ago. It’s a chance to see the scars left by miners’ tools in the rock, and to get a real feel for the scale and atmosphere underground, with immersive sounds as you explore.

Because the route is self-guided, you can take it at your own pace. You’ll collect a helmet and then head in, starting with Cavern No.1 where daylight streams through the overhead entrance before you descend Jacob’s Ladder and continue through the caverns.

It suits families, couples and curious visitors of all ages, and well-behaved dogs are welcome too, which makes it a handy stop if you’re out exploring with the dog.

A practical note for planning: the site says the caverns are suitable for all ages, but there are quite a few steps. If anyone in your group has mobility needs, it’s worth getting in touch before you visit so you know what to expect.

After your walk underground, there’s an on-site café for coffee, light bites and homemade cakes, plus an on-site gift shop with local slate items. Free parking is available on site. The site also features cave-aged cheese, check the website for the latest details. No need to book, just check opening times and prices before you travel.
