Half Term in Mid Wales

Half term in Mid Wales means a week of space, fresh air and enough activities to keep children occupied from breakfast to bedtime. Whether it is February, May or October, the region has things to do whatever the weather throws at you.

Outdoor Activities

If the sun is out, head for the coast. Barmouth, Borth and Aberdovey have beaches with space for kite flying, sandcastle building and rock pooling. The Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth is flat enough for family cycling along the estuary. Tree-top adventures and gorge walking are available near Machynlleth and in the Brecon Beacons.

Steam Railways

The Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge, the Talyllyn Railway near Tywyn, and the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway all run special half term services. Some offer themed events during school holidays, from Thomas the Tank Engine days to Halloween specials in October.

Animals and Farms

Spring half term in February or Easter coincides with lambing season on many Mid Wales farms. Gigrin Farm near Rhayader feeds red kites daily at 2pm, with hundreds circling above the feeding station. The Borth Animalarium is a small zoo with lemurs, meerkats and other animals that children can get close to.

Rainy Day Options

Rain happens, especially in February and October. The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth has interactive exhibits that work for primary school age upwards. Corris Craft Centre has workshops for chocolate making and candle dipping. Swimming pools in Brecon, Aberystwyth, Newtown and Llandrindod Wells are reliable wet weather options.

This delightful reserve is set in the heart of Mid Wales near Ystradffin, Rhandirmwyn. Dinas is a pleasant circular walk, part of the circuit is steep with difficult terrain. Strong footwear is advised.
