Beaches in Mid Wales | Cardigan Bay and the Ceredigion Coast

Beaches Along the Mid Wales Coast

The Mid Wales coastline runs along Cardigan Bay, from Barmouth in the north to Cardigan in the south. In between, there are long sandy beaches backed by dunes, quiet coves beneath the coast path, and seaside towns where the beach is the main attraction.

Best Beaches for Families

Barmouth has a long sandy beach with easy access from the town, lifeguards in summer and the famous railway bridge at one end. Aberdovey has a sheltered beach on the Dyfi estuary, good for younger children. Borth stretches for three miles, with a prehistoric submerged forest visible at low tide that fascinates children and adults alike. Tywyn has a wide sandy beach that rarely feels crowded.

Quiet Beaches and Hidden Coves

Penbryn, south of New Quay, is reached by a steep path through woods. It stays quiet even in high summer. Mwnt, near Cardigan, is a small sandy bay beneath a tiny church on the clifftop, one of the most photographed beaches in Wales. Llangrannog has a village beach backed by cliffs and a second beach, Cilborth, reached by the coast path.

Can I Take My Dog to the Beach?

Many Mid Wales beaches allow dogs year-round or have seasonal restrictions only during the main summer months. Borth, Tywyn and most of the smaller coves along the Ceredigion coast are dog friendly. Check local signs for specific restrictions May to September.
