Accessible Holidays in Mid Wales

Finding accessible accommodation and things to do in a rural area takes more homework than in a city, but Mid Wales has more options than many people expect. Properties with step-free access, wet rooms and wheelchair-friendly ground floors exist across the region, and several attractions have made genuine efforts to improve accessibility in recent years.

What accessible accommodation is available?

A growing number of self-catering cottages, holiday lets and B&Bs in Mid Wales have been adapted or purpose-built for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility needs. Features to look for include step-free access from parking to entrance, ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms, wet rooms or roll-in showers, and wider doorways. Some properties have hoists, profiling beds and other specialist equipment.

Tourism accommodation grading schemes (such as Visit Wales and the National Accessible Scheme) provide standardised accessibility ratings. Look for NAS ratings when browsing listings, and always contact the property directly to discuss your specific requirements. Most hosts are happy to provide detailed information and photographs of access arrangements.

What can I do on an accessible holiday in Mid Wales?

Several trails across the region have been designed or improved for wheelchair and pushchair access. The Elan Valley visitor centre has accessible paths along the reservoir. The Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth follows a flat, surfaced former railway line for 9.5 miles. Nant yr Arian forest near Aberystwyth has accessible viewing areas for the red kite feeding.

Several of the region's castles, gardens and historic sites have improved access in recent years, though older buildings inevitably have limitations. Powis Castle (National Trust) has accessible routes through the gardens, and the Brecon Beacons National Park has information on accessible walks and viewpoints.
