Weekend Breaks in Mid Wales

Two nights in Mid Wales is enough to feel the difference. It's not enough to see everything, but it's long enough to walk a hill, eat well, sleep properly and go home rested. Mid Wales covers Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia), from Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) in the south to Cadair Idris in the north, with the Cambrian Mountains in the middle and the Cardigan Bay coast to the west. Most of it is within three hours of Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Cardiff, which makes it a practical choice for a weekend away. Places to stay for a short break are listed below.

Where should I go for a weekend in Mid Wales?

For the coast: base yourself in Aberystwyth, Aberaeron or New Quay for harbours, beaches, the Wales Coast Path and dolphins in Cardigan Bay.
For mountains and estuaries: Dolgellau and Barmouth put you between Cadair Idris and the Mawddach estuary, with the Mawddach Trail on the doorstep.
For reservoirs and red kites: Rhayader and the Elan Valley, with dams, trails and the daily kite feed at Gigrin Farm.
For hills, books and good food: Hay-on-Wye, Crickhowell and Brecon on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog.
For castles and quiet lanes: Welshpool and Montgomery on the English border, with Powis Castle and a steam railway.

Weekend breaks in autumn and winter

Autumn and winter are good times for a short break in Mid Wales. The lanes are quiet, prices are often lower, and there's nothing better than a wood burner after a walk. Try the autumn colour in the Elan Valley and the Dyfi woods, the dark skies of the Cambrian Mountains, or a cottage with a log fire. In December, see Christmas in Mid Wales and our Twixmas breaks.

Weekend breaks in spring and summer

Spring brings lambs, bluebells and the ospreys back to the Dyfi. Summer is the warmest time and the beaches at Barmouth, Aberdyfi and along the Ceredigion coast are at their liveliest, though midweek is always quieter. In July 2027, the Tour de France starts a stage in Welshpool, so book early for that weekend.

What can I do in a weekend?

Walk one of our walking routes, ride a steam railway, cycle the Mawddach Trail or spend a day on the coast path. For ready-made plans, our itineraries include a romantic weekend in Bannau Brycheiniog, a cosy pub trail, a dark skies weekend, a Southern Eryri weekend and a Glyndŵr's Way walking weekend.

Where to stay for a weekend

Self-catering cottages, farm B&Bs, country house hotels, coaching inns and glamping sites all take short breaks, and many offer two-night stays outside the school holidays. Look for places with hot tubs, dog-friendly stays and romantic breaks, or check last-minute breaks for availability this weekend.

Do places in Mid Wales take two-night bookings?

Most hotels, inns and B&Bs do. Many self-catering cottages offer short breaks of two or three nights outside the peak summer weeks, often starting on a Friday or Monday. Check minimum stays before you book, especially over bank holidays and Christmas.

How do I get to Mid Wales for a weekend?

By train, the Cambrian Line runs from Birmingham and Shrewsbury to Welshpool, Newtown, Machynlleth and Aberystwyth, and the Heart of Wales Line serves Knighton, Llandrindod Wells and Builth Road. By car, the A470, A483 and A44 cross the region. Leave time to enjoy the drive; the roads are part of the trip.
