About

The Heart of Wales Line is one of Britain's most scenic rural railways. The line runs for 120 miles of dramatic scenery from Shrewsbury to Swansea, crossing two impressive viaducts at Knucklas and Cynghordy and through six tunnels, including one near the magnificent Sugar Loaf. Much loved by day trippers and walkers, the line also supports a vital transport link for lively rural communities.

The line travels south from Shrewsbury through the rolling hills of the Mid Wales Marches and market towns of Knighton, Llandrindod Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells before reaching the steel and tinplate town of Llanelli and then Swansea, the hometown of Dylan Thomas. There's something for everyone along the line, with tourist attractions for all the family.

Look out for red kite in the skies above the Epynt hills near Llanwrtyd Wells, the Radnor Forest between Llandrindod Wells and Knighton.

Visit the Offa's Dyke Centre in Knighton, enjoy a spa break at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells and don't miss the National Botanic Garden of Wales, a few miles from Ffairfach station.

A feast of panoramic views awaits you including the beautiful Loughor estuary near Llanelli, the meandering river Tywi between Llandeilo and Llandovery,

There's also a host of shopping opportunities from local market days at several small towns to the magnificent Swansea city centre. And if you are feeling more active, there's walking, cycling, golfing, fishing, watersports and much more along the route too.

There are 34 stations served by the line, some of which are request stops. Trains along the line call at all stations linked to the fantastic long distance walking Trail, ‘The Heart of Wales Line Trail’, a true rail to trail experience.
