Christmas with Dogs in Mid Wales

Christmas with dogs in Mid Wales is easy. Many cottages welcome dogs, most beaches allow them in winter, and plenty of village pubs have a spot by the fire for a wet dog after a walk. Across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) there's room to walk for miles without meeting many people. The places to stay listed on this page are dog friendly.

Can I take my dog on a Christmas break in Mid Wales?

Yes. Dog-friendly cottages are some of the first to book up for Christmas, so book early. Most ask for a small extra charge per dog and set a limit on numbers, and some ask that dogs stay off furniture and out of bedrooms. Check whether the garden is enclosed if your dog likes to wander. Winter beach walks

Seasonal dog restrictions on most Welsh beaches apply in summer, so in winter many beaches are open to dogs again. Check the signs at each beach before you let the dog off. On the Ceredigion coast, the long beach at Borth and Ynyslas stretches north towards the Dyfi estuary. In Southern Eryri, the beaches at Barmouth, Fairbourne and Aberdyfi are wide and sandy. Keep dogs on a lead near grey seals and their pups, which can still be on the beaches into early winter.

Forest and valley walks

Inland, the Elan Valley Trail near Rhayader and the waymarked trails in Hafren Forest near Llanidloes are good for dogs, as is the Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth. Keep dogs on leads around sheep, which graze on almost all the hills. See winter walks.

Christmas tips for dogs

Fireworks are sometimes let off on New Year's Eve, so keep dogs in and close the curtains. Keep chocolate, raisins and cooked bones out of reach, and pack their bed and a favourite toy so they settle quickly in a new place.

Are dogs allowed on beaches in Mid Wales in winter?

On most beaches, yes. Seasonal dog restrictions usually run through the summer months, so from autumn to spring many beaches are open to dogs again. Signs at each beach show the rules.
