Forest or Woodland, free entry

Just outside the historic town of Presteigne, Nash Wood lies half in Wales and half in England, making it true ‘border country’. Nash Wood forms part of the National Forest for Wales in the area known as Radnor Forest.

The woodland habitat is ideal to see buzzards and goshawk or you may see siskins and crossbills which thrive on the large cones produced by the noble and Douglas fir trees. The Nash Trail is a circular walking trail goes to a viewpoint overlooking Burfa Bank, one of the many hillforts along this part of the border.

Follow the red waymarkers and climb steadily from the car park through the woodland to the forest road. Once on the forest road take in the views back over to Presteigne and beyond to the hills of the Welsh Marches in the distance. Follow the road for a short distance and either take the shorter route downhill (blue arrows) back to the car park, or stay on the red trail which starts another steady climb to the high point of the wood.

In the spring, this spectacular woodland is covered in carpets of bluebells on display on the forest floor and the aromatic blends of wild herbs, (NRW) has selected Nash Wood as one of five of the very best woodland walks across Wales where people of all ages and abilities can experience the sights, sounds and smells of the spring season.

In the autumn you may also see one of the many roe deer that live here and, keep an eye out for colourful fungi.
