Get back to Nature in Mid Wales
Mid Wales has an abundance of natural environments and is home to some of the rarest species of birds and animals in the UK.
These include visiting ospreys, red kites, otters, beavers and dolphins.
Experience the thrill of a wildlife boat trip in Cardigan Bay and you may be lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins or explore the Cambrian Mountain uplands and you will be sure to see red kites and buzzards overhead.
Mid Wales offers some of the best wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. You can even get up close and personal with a Falconry Experience Day.
Visit one of our many Mid Wales nature reserves, forests and wildlife attractions including the new Dyfi Wildlife Centre in the heart of the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere and see red kites up close at Bwlch Nant yr Arian visitor centre near Aberystwyth.
Red kites are everywhere in Mid Wales now, and watching them is never dull. At Nant yr Arian near Aberystwyth and Gigrin Farm near Rhayader, daily feeding sessions bring dozens of kites circling and diving, close enough to hear the wind through their feathers.
Ospreys returned to Wales at the Dyfi estuary near Machynlleth, and the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust runs a live nest camera during breeding season. You can visit the viewing point from April to September.
Nature reserves across Powys and Ceredigion hold habitats from upland bog and ancient oak woodland to coastal saltmarsh. The diversity means you can see very different species in a short distance, pied flycatchers and redstarts in the oak woods, curlews on the moors, choughs on the coast.
Otters are present on most Mid Wales rivers, though seeing one takes patience and a bit of luck. Dawn and dusk on the Teifi, Wye or Dyfi give you the best chance.
