A stage of the Tour de France is scheduled to come through Wales in 2027. This will bring the world's most famous cycling race to Welsh roads for the first time, with the peloton expected to pass through some of the most scenic landscapes in Britain.
The Tour de France is a three-week road cycling race held every July. It is the biggest annual sporting event in the world by viewership, with an estimated two billion people watching globally. When a stage comes to a new region, it brings international attention, thousands of roadside spectators and a surge of cycling tourism that lasts for years afterwards.
The route details for the 2027 Welsh stage are yet to be confirmed. Previous Grand Depart events in the UK (2007 in London and Kent, 2014 in Yorkshire) drew millions of spectators to the roadsides and generated hundreds of millions of pounds in tourism revenue. The Yorkshire Grand Depart in 2014 attracted 4.8 million roadside spectators and led to the creation of the Tour de Yorkshire, which ran for several years afterwards.
Mid Wales offers exactly the kind of terrain that makes for exciting Tour de France stages. The mountain roads of Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia), the climbs through the Cambrian Mountains and the coastal roads along Cardigan Bay are all genuinely challenging and spectacularly scenic. Whether the route comes through Powys, Ceredigion or both, the racing will be world-class and the backdrop will be unforgettable.
When the route is confirmed, we will publish detailed guides on the best viewing spots along the Mid Wales sections. Mountain summit finishes and steep climbs are where the crowds gather in greatest numbers, as these are the points where the race is decided. The roadside atmosphere on a Tour stage is unique: free to watch, family-friendly and electric with excitement.
Accommodation along the route will fill up fast once the stage is confirmed. If you are planning to come, book early. Consider staying for a few extra days to explore Mid Wales by bike yourself. The quiet roads that make this area ideal for a Tour stage also make it one of the best road cycling destinations in Britain.
The cycling infrastructure in Mid Wales includes mountain bike trails at Nant yr Arian, the Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth, and hundreds of miles of quiet lanes through the Brecon Beacons, the Elan Valley and the Cambrian Mountains. Whether you are a road cyclist, mountain biker or casual rider, Mid Wales has routes to match.
We will update this page with confirmed dates, route maps, spectator guides and accommodation availability as information becomes available. In the meantime, start exploring Mid Wales by bike and see for yourself why the Tour de France chose Wales.
