Dark Sky Events in Mid Wales
Throughout autumn and winter, astronomy groups, national parks and nature reserves across Mid Wales host stargazing events. These range from informal telescope evenings at car park viewpoints to full guided sessions with expert astronomers.
The Elan Valley runs a programme of dark sky events from October through March, usually at the visitor centre near Rhayader. Bring warm layers, a flask of something hot and your own binoculars if you have them, though telescopes are provided at most organised events.
The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority runs its own series of stargazing walks and talks, often timed around meteor showers like the Perseids in August or the Geminids in December. Places go quickly for these so booking ahead is a good idea.
Several accommodation providers near dark sky sites offer stargazing packages, especially during new moon periods. Some have their own telescopes on site or can arrange private guided sessions.
The Spaceguard Centre near Knighton is the UK's only dedicated observatory for near-Earth objects. They run regular public open evenings and group bookings throughout the year.
