You are here: Experience and Enjoy > Family Attractions
Mid Wales is a good place to bring children because there is space to run around, things to see that do not cost a fortune, and a pace that suits families who want to slow down. Across Powys, Ceredigion and Meirionnydd, you will find castles, wildlife centres, narrow-gauge railways, beaches and forests that keep children occupied without the queues and crowds of more commercial destinations.
Children who like scrambling over old walls will enjoy the castles scattered across the region. Castell y Bere near Dolgellau is a ruined Welsh fortress in a quiet valley. Powis Castle near Welshpool has grand rooms and formal gardens. Aberystwyth Castle sits on a headland overlooking the sea. Most are free or low cost to visit, and you can combine them with walks and picnics nearby.
Mid Wales has several narrow-gauge railways that appeal to children and adults alike. The Vale of Rheidol Railway runs from Aberystwyth up to Devil's Bridge through wooded hillside. The Talyllyn Railway near Tywyn is the oldest preserved railway in the world. Both run seasonal timetables with special events during school holidays. The Brecon Mountain Railway runs along the edge of the Brecon Beacons reservoir.
The Bwlch Nant yr Arian visitor centre near Aberystwyth has daily red kite feeding, forest walks and a mountain bike trail. Gilfach Nature Reserve near Rhayader has otters, dippers and red kites along the River Marteg. The Dyfi Osprey Project near Machynlleth broadcasts live footage of nesting ospreys during the breeding season.
Ceredigion's beaches are safe for paddling and sandcastle building. Borth, Clarach and Aberystwyth's North Beach all have easy access. In the Brecon Beacons, families can try gorge walking, canoeing on Llangorse Lake, or simply find a river pool to paddle in on a warm afternoon.
