The Tour de France comes to Mid Wales on Sunday 4 July 2027, when stage three of the men's race starts in Welshpool and heads south through Powys, by way of the Newtown area, Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells and Brecon, to finish in Cardiff. The detailed route is still to be confirmed. This is a three-day plan for race weekend in and around Welshpool: your own ride on the Saturday, the race start on the Sunday and a steam train on the Monday.
Get your own miles in the day before. The Welshpool and Berriew cycle route is a 24-mile loop on quiet lanes, partly on National Cycle Route 81, with a few short, steep climbs near Hendomen, Powis Castle and Berriew. Allow about three hours. For something flatter, the towpath of the Montgomery Canal runs through the middle of Welshpool. In the afternoon, visit Powis Castle and Garden on the edge of town, with its terraced gardens and views over the Severn valley.
Welshpool will be busy from early morning, with team buses, the riders signing on and the ceremonial start. Pick a spot in town to see the riders roll out, or head a few miles down the route for a quieter roadside. The publicity caravan usually passes an hour or two before the riders. Road closures and viewing areas will be announced by the organisers nearer the time, so check before you travel. Once the race has gone, have lunch at Tastes of Wales, a tearoom that uses Welsh produce.
Finish with a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, a narrow gauge steam line that climbs eight miles through the Banwy valley from Raven Square in Welshpool to Llanfair Caereinion, with some of the steepest gradients of any railway in Britain.
Book early, as rooms in and around Welshpool will fill months ahead of race weekend. The Royal Oak Hotel is a historic coaching inn in the centre of town, and Westwood Park Hotel is a traditional pub with rooms. Montgomery, Newtown and Llanfair Caereinion are all within half an hour.
