A three-day food trail across Mid Wales, meeting the people who make things: farmhouse cheese in the Teifi valley, gin and whisky by Cardigan Bay, craft gin in a Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) slate village and wine on the slopes near Montgomery. It runs from south Ceredigion north and east to the English border, with farm shops and pub lunches along the way.
Start near Llandysul at the family farm where Teifi Cheese has been made for decades. Teifi Cheese Tastings, in a 17th-century gallery on the farm, include a talk and a tasting with crackers and chutney. On the same farm, Dà Mhìle Distillery makes gin, whisky and liqueurs, and runs its own tastings. In the afternoon, drive to Tanygroes near Cardigan for In the Welsh Wind, a distillery making gin and 100% Welsh whisky, with tastings and gin-making sessions.
Drive north to Moody Meadows near Aberaeron. The farm shop sells Welsh brands, crafts and a deli counter, and the Moody Cow Bistro serves Welsh food all day. For dinner, Y Ffarmers is a country dining pub in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, seven miles inland from Aberystwyth, with a menu built on what's local and in season.
Head north to Corris, where brothers Pete and Danny Cameron set up the Dyfi Distillery in 2016, the first commercial gin distillery in Mid Wales, using botanicals foraged from the Dyfi Biosphere. Then drive east over the hills to Kerry Vale Vineyard near Montgomery for a vineyard walk and a glass of Welsh wine with lunch in the cafe. Finish in Welshpool at Tastes of Wales, a tearoom that uses Welsh suppliers, for afternoon tea.
