A five-day family holiday based on the Cardigan Bay coast, mixing sandy beaches, farm animals and narrow gauge steam railways. It's planned around a base near Aberystwyth, so no drive is longer than about an hour, and there's an indoor option every day in case it rains.
Start gently at Borth, three miles of sand with a view across the Dyfi estuary to Aberdyfi. At low tide you may see the stumps of a drowned forest on the beach. In the afternoon, visit The Animalarium in the village, where children can pet and feed farm animals, with play areas and a cafe.
Ride the electric cliff railway up Constitution Hill for the view over the town and bay, then catch the Vale of Rheidol Railway from the station in town. The steam train takes about an hour to climb the Rheidol valley to Devil's Bridge, where three bridges are built one on top of the other over the gorge. The waterfall walks are steep in places, so wear good shoes.
Fantasy Farm Park at Llanrhystud, south of Aberystwyth, has lamb feeding, milking demonstrations and space to run about. Carry on south to Moody Meadows near Aberaeron for the Moody Calf Play Barn and trampoline park, and tea in the bistro.
Take a boat trip from New Quay harbour to look for bottlenose dolphins, seals and seabirds. Trips last from one to two hours and depend on the weather, so book ahead and check the evening before. Spend the afternoon on New Quay's harbour beach, or the sandy coves at Cwmtydu and Llangrannog to the south.
Drive north to Tywyn in Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) for the Talyllyn Railway, the first railway in the world to be preserved by volunteers, which runs seven miles inland past Dolgoch Falls. Finish at Corris Craft Centre, where King Arthur's Labyrinth takes you by boat into an old slate mine for an underground story trail.
