A two-night winter weekend in Hay-on-Wye, the book town on the Wales and England border in Powys, timed for the Hay Festival Winter Weekend from 26 to 29 November 2026. Bookshops, talks at Hay Castle, a winter walk in the Black Mountains and a pub by the fire.
Stay in town so you can walk everywhere. Broomfield House in Hay-on-Wye has guest rooms a few minutes from the bookshops. Spend the evening at a festival event in the castle grounds, then find somewhere warm for dinner.
Spend the morning in the bookshops, from specialist dealers to the honesty shelves outside the castle, where you leave your money in a box. In the afternoon, drive up the Gospel Pass to Hay Bluff on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for a short walk with views over the Wye valley. Back in Hay, catch another festival event before dinner.
For something special, Llangoed Hall near Llyswen, a country house hotel in the Wye valley, has a restaurant open to non-residents. Book ahead.
Drive south through the Black Mountains to Crickhowell, a small town with independent shops. The Bear Hotel is an old coaching inn for Sunday lunch, and the Dragon Inn has rooms if you're staying on. Finish in Brecon, where The Castle of Brecon Hotel sits above the town, or head out with Black Mountain Adventure for a last taste of the hills.
Rooms in Hay go quickly over festival weekends, so book early or stay in Brecon or Crickhowell. There's no station in Hay: the nearest is Hereford. The Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Builth Wells follows on 30 November and 1 December.
