Family Christmas Break | Four Days of Santa Trains, Castles and Festive Fun

A mother and child beside a steam engine as the driver in a Santa hat waves from the cab

A four-day family Christmas break in Mid Wales in the run-up to Christmas, with a Santa steam train, a castle, a festive fair, a nature walk and a cosy cottage to come back to. It suits families with young children, and works best on the weekend of 12 and 13 December 2026, when several Santa trains and festive events coincide.

Day one: Welshpool and a Santa train

Start in Powys with the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, whose Santa Specials run from 12 to 22 December 2026 from Llanfair Caereinion, with Santa and his elves on board and a present for each child. In the afternoon, visit Powis Castle near Welshpool to walk the gardens in the winter light.

Day two: Corris and King Arthur

Drive west to Corris near Machynlleth. The Corris Railway runs Santa Specials on 12 and 13 December 2026, and King Arthur's Labyrinth nearby takes you by boat through an underground waterfall into caverns full of Welsh legends. Stay in a farm cottage near Machynlleth, such as Gogarth Hall Farm Holidays, for the next two nights.

Day three: Aberystwyth

Head down the coast to Aberystwyth. Fantasy Farm Park has Santa's Grotto on 12 and 13 and 19 and 20 December 2026. The Vale of Rheidol Railway runs its Ticket to Christmas trains from 16 to 23 December. Finish with a walk along the promenade at dusk, when starlings swirl over the pier.

Day four: Llanerchaeron

Drive south to Llanerchaeron near Aberaeron, a Georgian villa and farm estate that holds Christmas weekends on 5 and 6, 12 and 13, and 19 and 20 December 2026. Walk the estate and the river path, then head home.

Good to know

Book Santa trains and grottos as early as you can, as they sell out. Pack hats, gloves and waterproofs, and check each attraction's Christmas opening before you travel.
