Mid Wales has always been a place that does things at its own pace. So it is no surprise that some of the most thoughtful eco-friendly accommodation in Wales has grown up here, quietly and without fuss.

You will find properties powered by renewables, heated by biomass or ground source, insulated with natural materials. Some are new builds designed from scratch to be low-impact. Others are old farmhouses and barns that have been renovated carefully, keeping what works and improving what does not.

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth has been here since the 1970s, and its influence runs through the area. Organic smallholdings near Lampeter and Tregaron. Solar-powered glamping sites in the Cambrian Mountains. Cottages with composting toilets and wood-fired hot water in the hills above the Wye Valley.

Being eco-friendly here does not mean roughing it. Many of these properties are properly comfortable: good beds, well-equipped kitchens, wood burners for cold evenings. The difference is in the details: locally sourced welcome packs, refillable soap, a library of walking guides instead of a television.
