Some of the best places to stay in Mid Wales come with gardens that are left to do their own thing. Meadow grass, wildflowers, bees working the clover. It is not landscaped perfection. It is the kind of garden where you sit outside with a cup of tea and watch the butterflies.

Across Powys and Ceredigion, you will find cottages, B&Bs and farmhouses where the owners have let the land grow. Native wildflower meadows around old farmsteads. Hedgerows thick with foxgloves and honeysuckle in summer. Apple orchards left slightly wild on purpose.

These places suit people who like being outdoors without going far. A book and a deckchair in the garden. Morning coffee while watching goldfinches on the feeders. Children exploring the edges of a meadow. Dogs dozing in the shade of an old oak.

The Cambrian Mountains and the Brecon Beacons sit within easy reach, but honestly, some guests barely leave the garden. The wildflower season runs roughly from May to August, peaking in June when the meadows around Tregaron and the Elan Valley turn colours you would not believe without seeing them.

If this matters to you, look for places that mention gardens, meadows or smallholdings in their descriptions. Many of these properties are working farms or former farms that have kept the land as it should be.
