You are here: Experience and Enjoy > What's On > Royal Welsh Show 2026
The Royal Welsh Show is held every July at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, Powys. It runs for four days, typically the third week of July, and draws over 200,000 visitors. It is the single biggest event in the Mid Wales calendar and one of the largest agricultural shows anywhere in Europe.
If you have never been, it is worth knowing what to expect. The showground covers a huge site beside the River Wye, with permanent buildings for livestock, food halls, craft displays and machinery. There are hundreds of trade stands, a main ring with livestock judging, sheep shearing competitions, forestry displays and equestrian events. In the evenings, there are concerts and social events that keep the showground lively well after dark.
The livestock sections are the heart of the show. Cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses are judged across multiple rings, and the standard is high. Even if farming is not your thing, watching the young handlers in the cattle ring or the sheep shearing speed competitions is genuinely entertaining.
The food hall is one of the best in Wales. Local producers from across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) set up stalls selling cheese, cured meats, honey, cakes, preserves and Welsh cakes. You can eat well all day without visiting the same stand twice.
For families, there is a countryside area with small animals, tractor rides and craft activities. The forestry section includes pole climbing, chainsaw carving and woodland skills demonstrations. The machinery section has everything from vintage tractors to modern farm equipment.
Accommodation around Builth Wells fills up fast during Show week. Book early if you want to stay close. Camping is popular, with several sites within walking distance of the showground. B&Bs and self-catering cottages in Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Rhayader are all within easy reach.
Builth Wells is on the A483 in central Powys. The showground has large car parks with shuttle buses. By train, the nearest station is Builth Road on the Heart of Wales line. There are also bus services during show week from surrounding towns.
The Royal Welsh Show is a working agricultural event, a food festival, a county fair and a social occasion all at once. It is the kind of event where farming families catch up, children run free and everyone eats too much. If you are in Mid Wales in July, it would be a shame to miss it.
