You are here: Experience and Enjoy > What's On > National Eisteddfod 2027
The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the largest cultural festival in Europe dedicated to a single language. Held every August, it moves between north and south Wales each year, bringing with it a week of competitions, performances, exhibitions and celebrations of Welsh language and culture.
The Eisteddfod traces its origins back to 1176, when Lord Rhys held a gathering of poets and musicians at Cardigan Castle. The modern National Eisteddfod has been running annually since 1861 and draws around 150,000 visitors over the course of the week.
The Eisteddfod is centred around competitions in music, poetry, literature, drama, dance, art and craft. The main ceremonies take place in the Pavilion, a large temporary venue that seats several thousand people. The Chairing of the Bard and the Crowning of the Bard are the two most prestigious events, where poets are honoured for their work in strict-metre and free-verse poetry respectively.
Beyond the competitions, the Maes (field) hosts a village of stalls, exhibition spaces, performance areas and food outlets. There is live music throughout the day and into the evening, theatre performances, literary talks, science exhibitions and children's activities. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and you do not need to speak Welsh to enjoy the experience, though it helps to have a few words.
The Eisteddfod is a significant event for whichever area hosts it. It brings thousands of visitors, generates substantial economic activity and puts the host region in the national spotlight. Mid Wales has hosted the Eisteddfod several times, most recently in Meifod (Powys) and Aberystwyth (Ceredigion).
When the Eisteddfod comes to Mid Wales, it brings visitors who might not otherwise have explored Powys, Ceredigion or Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia). Many extend their stay to walk the hills, visit the coast or explore the market towns. The legacy of an Eisteddfod visit often includes return trips in later years.
The 2027 National Eisteddfod location and dates will be confirmed in due course. We will update this page with full details as they are announced, including accommodation recommendations, travel information and things to do in the area during Eisteddfod week.
If you have never been to the Eisteddfod, it is worth planning a trip. It is unlike any other festival in Britain: a celebration of language, creativity and community that has been running for over 800 years.
