Walking Routes

We're so proud of our Mid Wales countryside and coast that we know will inspire you to consider car-free options for a day trip or longer stay. Just park the car and explore our fantastic country by train, cycle or on foot.

You may decide to travel by train to a selected point, then walk a section of the beautiful Wales Coast Path or one of the many circular trails from stations along the Heart of Wales Line or the Cambrian / Cambrian Coast Line before heading back home on a train.

If you want to explore on foot, we have three long distance walking trails: Glyndwr's Way National Trail, Offa's Dyke Path and Wales Coast Path.

For shorter trails we have many forest walks, nature reserves and town trails to explore.

Walks Across Mid Wales

The variety of walking in Mid Wales is hard to beat. The Ceredigion coast path traces clifftops between Cardigan and Borth, dropping down to sandy coves and climbing back up through wildflower meadows. Inland, the Cambrian Mountains have long-distance routes across open moorland where the views stretch endlessly.

Glyndwr's Way runs 135 miles from Knighton to Welshpool through the heart of Mid Wales, and you can walk sections of it as day walks. The Elan Valley trail loops around the reservoirs through mixed forest and open hillside. In southern Snowdonia, paths climb to the summit of Cadair Idris from several directions, each with its own character.

For shorter walks, almost every town and village has waymarked routes that take an hour or two. Pick up leaflets from visitor centres or check the local walking pages for route details and maps.
