New Year in Mid Wales

New Year in Mid Wales is about seeing the year in with good company and starting the next one outside. Spend New Year's Eve in a village pub or by your own fire, then walk it off on New Year's Day on empty hills, beaches or forest trails across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia). In Welsh, Happy New Year is Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.

New Year's Eve

Most towns and villages see the New Year in at the pub, and some hotels and inns hold New Year's Eve dinners or parties. These usually sell out, so book early and check what's included. A first walk on New Year's Day

There's no better start to the year than a walk. Good choices for New Year's Day include the Mawddach Trail from Dolgellau to Barmouth, the Elan Valley Trail near Rhayader, a stretch of the Ceredigion Coast Path, or, for experienced walkers with winter kit, Cadair Idris above Dolgellau. Some towns hold a New Year's Day sea dip, but only ever swim with an organised group and never alone. See winter walks.

Stargazing on the longest nights

The nights around New Year are some of the longest of the year. Away from the lights, the Elan Valley Dark Sky Park and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) Dark Sky Reserve are good places to see Orion and the winter stars. See stargazing in Mid Wales.

Is Mid Wales good for a quiet New Year break?

Yes. If you'd rather avoid crowds and big city fireworks, a cottage in the hills with a fire, a good dinner and a clear sky is a calmer way to start the year, and you wake up on 1 January with the hills on the doorstep.

Do I need to book New Year's Eve in Mid Wales?

Yes, for dinners and parties at hotels and inns, and for cottages over New Year. Village pubs are usually walk-in, but ring ahead if you want a table.
