Autumn Food and Drink in Mid Wales

Autumn is harvest time in Mid Wales, and it's one of the best times of year to eat here. Farm shops fill up with apples, squash and root vegetables, game comes onto pub menus, and Sunday roasts are back in season. Across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia), the food is honest and local, often from the farm down the road.

What's in season in autumn

From September, orchards and gardens give up apples and pears, followed by squash, pumpkins, leeks, parsnips and swede. Welsh lamb is still at its best, and beef from the hill farms goes well with the colder evenings. The pheasant season opens on 1 October, and venison and other game start to appear on menus in country pubs and restaurants.

Mushrooms come up in the woods and fields after autumn rain, but please leave foraging to people who really know what they're picking. Many chefs and markets sell wild mushrooms gathered by experienced foragers.

Farm shops and local produce

Farm shops are the easiest way to take a taste of Mid Wales home. Bargoed Farm near Aberaeron in Ceredigion stocks local fruit and vegetables, cheese, cured meats and home baking, and makes up hampers of Welsh produce. Beer, cider and spirits

Mid Wales has a good number of small breweries, cider makers and distilleries. The Heart of Wales Brewery in Llanwrtyd Wells brews its own ales, Dyfi Distillery at Corris near Machynlleth makes gin with wild botanicals foraged in the Dyfi Biosphere, and Dà Mhìle Distillery makes organic spirits on its family farm in Ceredigion. Pubs with a fire and a Sunday roast

Is Mid Wales good for a food break in autumn? Yes, especially if your idea of a good meal is a roast in a village pub with the fire lit. Many country pubs across Mid Wales light the fire from October, and Sunday lunch is the busiest meal of the week, so book ahead. Plenty of pubs welcome dogs after a walk. The Royal Welsh Winter Fair

The food year in Mid Wales ends with the Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on 30 November and 1 December 2026. The Food Hall is packed with Welsh producers selling cheese, meat, bread, drinks and chocolate, and it's a good place to start your Christmas shopping.
