Aberystwyth Comedy Festival

Aberystwyth Comedy Festival is an annual comedy festival in Aberystwyth, the seaside university town on Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion. In 2026 it runs from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October, with stand-up, sketch, improv and family-friendly shows at venues across the town, including Aberystwyth Arts Centre. It's run by the same team behind the Machynlleth Comedy Festival in May.

If you're looking for a reason to spend an October weekend on the Welsh coast, this is a good one. You get well-known names and new acts trying out material, in rooms small enough that you can see the whites of their eyes.

What's on at the festival

Expect a mix of headline stand-up, work-in-progress shows, sketch and improv, with family shows earlier in the day. Shows are spread across the weekend, so you can see several in a day and still have time to eat properly in between. Programmes and tickets are on the Aberystwyth Comedy Festival listing. Popular shows sell out, so book the ones you really want before you travel.

Is Aberystwyth easy to get to for the festival?

Yes. Aberystwyth is the end of the Cambrian Line, with trains from Shrewsbury through Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth. The station is a short walk from the seafront and the town centre. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is on the university campus on Penglais Hill above the town, a steep walk or a short taxi ride from the station. If you're driving, the town is reached on the A487 along the coast or the A44 from Llangurig.

What else to do in Aberystwyth in October

Between shows, walk the length of the promenade and kick the bar at the far end, as everyone here does. Take the cliff railway up Constitution Hill for the view along the coast (check it's running, as the season ends in autumn), or climb to the ruins of the castle on the headland. The National Library of Wales sits above the town with free exhibitions.

On the Saturday or Sunday morning, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway 12 miles inland to Devil's Bridge, where the Mynach Falls are running full after autumn rain. Starlings gather under the pier on autumn evenings before they settle for the night, so it's worth being on the prom at dusk.

Where to eat and drink

Aberystwyth has plenty of independent cafés, pubs and restaurants within a few streets of the seafront, and most are busy on festival weekend. Book a table for Saturday evening if there's somewhere you want to go. See our guide to eating out in Mid Wales for ideas.

Where to stay for the festival

Stay in town and you can walk to most venues and back along the prom. Guesthouses and hotels line the seafront, and there are self-catering cottages in the villages along the coast at Borth, Llanrhystud and Aberaeron. Browse places to stay on the Ceredigion coast, and book early for the festival weekend.
