Your starting point is the market town of Llanidloes, which is the very first town on the banks of the mighty River Severn, which starts it's long journey through the Severn Valley from the nearby Hafren Forest high in the Cambrian Mountains. The Hafren Forest has ample parking, a boardwalk and various other long distance walking trails including Glyndwr's Way National Trail and the Severn Way pass through the forest.

The views are wonderful and you can expect to see red kites along the way and in the summer months there are ospreys nesting near to Llyn Clywedog Reservoir. Machynlleth is located in the heart of the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere. This ancient market town is the gateway to the Mid Wales coast and links  The Coatal Way south towards Aberystwyth and the Ceredigion coast, and north to southern Snowdonia.
