Mid Wales has festivals and shows from spring to autumn, from the Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells to literary festivals, craft fairs and some of the oddest events in Britain. If you're coming for one, it's worth staying a few extra days. Here's how to make a holiday of it.

It also hosts Wonderwool Wales, the wool and natural fibre festival, on the last weekend of April. Afterwards, drive 20 minutes north to Rhayader and the Elan Valley for reservoir walks and the red kite feed at Gigrin Farm.
Hay Festival fills the town every late May and early June, and there's a winter weekend in late November. Stay on to walk up Hay Bluff, browse the bookshops without the crowds, or follow the Wye by canoe.
This small town hosts some of Wales's most unusual events, including the Bog Snorkelling Championships in August and the Man versus Horse race in June. Walk the town heritage trail and the lanes into the Cambrian Mountains afterwards.
The International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth Arts Centre brings potters from around the world every other summer, and the arts centre has a year-round programme of theatre, film and exhibitions. Stay for the beaches and the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
