Day Out on the Heart Of Wales Line

Train pulled in at a platform in Mid-Wales

Plan your day visit by train to Llanwrtyd Wells which is the smallest town in Britain but with the most eccentric range of activities on offer!

About Llanwrtyd Wells

You'll arrive at Llanwrtyd Wells from one the many stations dotted along the scenic Heart of Wales Line. This mainline railway runs all the way from Shrewsbury, through the stunning Mid Wales countryside, and south on to Swansea.

Llanwrtyd Walles is a traditional a "Spa" town because of its naturally spring close to the River Irfon. Visit the Llanwrtyd & District Heritage and Arts Centre which is housed in a sensitively renovated Congregational Chapel near the centre of Llanwrtyd. The Visitor Centre includes interactive exhibits that show the history of this part of Wales and the town as a major tourist attraction when it hosted a spa.

Llanwrtyd is probably best known as the capital of the famous for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships and the Man v Horse race, and many other quirky events held throughout the year.

Lunch

Getting muddy in a bog not your cup of tea? Then maybe sample lunch at the Drovers Rest or the Neuadd Arms which boasts it's own micro brewery. Both are found near the river in the town centre. Why not pop in and see for yourself!

Feeling Adventurous?

Interested in hiring a bike for the day? No problem. The Hub in Llanwrtyd Wells can provide you with bikes for the so you can try some mountain biking or cycling along some of the quiet country lanes which surround the town.

If you are feeling more adventurous, try cycling up to Sugar Loaf hill. This is a few miles from Llanwrtyd Wells but offers a panoramic view of the area. You may never have guessed but the term "Sugar Loaf" was the term used to describe old refining techniques or sugar which produced a dome shaped object. Sugar loaf mountains/hills are those that resemble a similar shape to this.

There are plenty of walks in and around Llanwrtyd too if you fancy a day in the countryside including the Heritage Town Trail.

Places to eat & drink

How long you stay is entirely up to you!  You will need to plan your train times in advance or opt for an overnight stay.

If you decide to stay in the town for an evening meal there are few great places where you can eat and make the most of your stay!

How about the Neuadd Arms - which is situated in town square.
