Y Lanfa is housed in a restored historic warehouse beside the Montgomery Canal with Welshpool Library on the ground floor and Powysland Museum upstairs. The museum depicts the archaeology and social history of Montgomeryshire.
The ground floor holds Welshpool Library with a wide range of books, audio books and a local history reference section. There is free Wifi, Customer Service point for Powys County Council services and access to computers, printing and photocopying.
Upstairs, Powysland Museum, depicts the archaeology and social history of Welshpool and Montgomeryshire. The first gallery shows how life in mid-Wales has changed with exhibits on trades, pubs, the railway, Laura Ashley and the wars, including displays on the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry. The second gallery takes the visitor on a chronological tour of local archaeological finds from the prehistoric, the Ancient Romans to the early Medieval period. The displays include archaeological finds from locals and excavations carried out by the Clwyd -Powys Archaeological Trust.
