Eating Out in Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth is a university town of 15,000 on the Ceredigion coast, and the food scene has more range than you might expect. The university brings an international audience. The sea brings fresh fish. The farming hinterland brings lamb, beef and dairy.

Fish and Seafood

Aberystwyth sits on Cardigan Bay, so fresh fish is a given. The harbour has fish for sale straight off the boats. Several restaurants and fish and chip shops along the seafront serve locally landed catches. Mackerel, sea bass, crab and lobster appear on menus in season.

Restaurants and Cafes

The town centre has a mix of independent restaurants, pub food and cafes. Pier Street and the streets around the castle have the highest concentration. Several restaurants focus on Welsh produce, with menus that change seasonally. The Arts Centre cafe on Penglais Hill has views across the bay and decent food. Along the prom, there are cafes where you can sit and watch the sea while eating.

Local Produce

The Farmers Market runs regularly in town, bringing producers from across Ceredigion. Welsh cakes, artisan cheese, local honey, and organic vegetables are standard finds. The covered market behind Great Darkgate Street has butchers and food stalls that have served the town for generations.

Evening and Late

As a university town, Aberystwyth has a nightlife that the surrounding market towns do not. Pubs serve food into the evening, and several restaurants stay open later than you would find elsewhere in Mid Wales. The town is compact enough to walk between venues.
