Cosy Christmas Cottages in Mid Wales

A Christmas cottage in Mid Wales means a log burner, space for the family and a walk from the door on Christmas morning. Self-catering cottages across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) take Christmas and New Year bookings, many with open fires, some with hot tubs, and plenty welcome dogs. The places listed on this page have fireplaces or wood burners.

When should I book a Christmas cottage in Mid Wales?

As early as you can. The best Christmas and New Year cottages are often booked by October, especially larger houses and those with hot tubs. Many ask for a minimum stay of three or four nights over Christmas, and changeover days can differ from the rest of the year, so check dates carefully.

What to look for

Check whether logs are included or cost extra, how the heating works, and whether there's somewhere to dry boots and coats. Ask about the kitchen if you're cooking Christmas dinner: oven size, dishwasher and enough seats round the table. For a big family, look at farmhouses and barn conversions sleeping eight or more.

Hot tubs and dark skies

A hot tub on a frosty night under a clear sky is a Christmas treat, especially in the Elan Valley or Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), where the skies are some of the darkest in Britain. Browse places to stay with hot tubs and dark skies accommodation.

Bringing the dog

Where to stay for Christmas

For reservoirs, red kites and dark skies, look around Rhayader and the Elan Valley. For coast walks on Boxing Day, try the Ceredigion coast near Aberaeron and New Quay. For mountains, Dolgellau and the Mawddach put you beneath Cadair Idris. For bookshops and pubs, base yourself near Hay-on-Wye or Brecon.

Do Christmas cottages in Mid Wales have minimum stays?

Most do. Three or four nights over Christmas is common, and some larger houses only take week-long bookings. Midweek stays in early December and January are usually more flexible.
