Halloween in Mid Wales

Halloween in Mid Wales falls in the middle of October half term, when evenings are dark by six and the hills have turned brown and copper. Across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia), heritage railways run evening ghost trains, attractions put on family trails, and there are enough old stories in the hills and gorges to keep everyone talking on the walk back.

In Wales, the night of 31 October has its own name: Nos Calan Gaeaf, the eve of the first day of winter. It was traditionally a night for bonfires, fortune telling and staying away from churchyards. Some of that has survived, and some of it has been swapped for pumpkins.

Ghost trains and evening rides

The Bala Lake Railway runs Halloween Trains on 30 and 31 October 2026, with two evening departures from Llanuwchllyn at 5:30pm and 6:45pm. The train heads along the shore of Llyn Tegid in the dark before things go wrong, with ghosts and witches waiting at the halts on the way back. The Talyllyn Railway near Tywyn in Southern Eryri has run its Steam and Scream evenings in past years, with an unlit train to Dolgoch Woods and a walk through the trees with some unexpected company. Check the railway's own dates for 2026 before you plan around it.

Underground and after dark

For children who like to be a little bit scared, the slate caverns at Corris near Machynlleth are hard to beat. King Arthur's Labyrinth takes you by boat through an underground waterfall into caverns where Welsh legends are told in the dark, and Corris Mine Explorers leads guided trips into a Victorian slate mine that looks as if the miners left yesterday. Both are good on wet days.

Legends and spooky walks

Mid Wales has plenty of stories to tell on a dark walk. At Devil's Bridge in Ceredigion, the legend says the Devil built the first bridge across the gorge in exchange for the first living thing to cross it, and an old woman sent her dog over first. The Mynach Falls are loud and the gorge is dark under the trees in October, which helps.
