Autumn in Mid Wales
Autumn in Mid Wales is golden valleys, waterfalls in full flow, red kites over the hills and a fire to come back to. From late September to the end of November, the lanes across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Southern Snowdonia) are quiet, the woods turn copper and the evenings are made for settling in.
Walks through golden valleys
The oak woods around the Elan Valley reservoirs near Rhayader turn gold through October, and Hafren Forest near Llanidloes, where the River Severn begins, has larch that goes orange in late autumn. The Wye Valley runs south through Powys past Rhayader and Builth Wells. In Southern Eryri, the Mawddach Trail follows the estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth. See our autumn walks.
Waterfalls and wildlife
After autumn rain, the falls at Devil's Bridge in Ceredigion and Dolgoch Falls in Southern Eryri are at their loudest. Red kites are fed every day at Gigrin Farm near Rhayader, grey seals have their pups on the Ceredigion coast from September to November, and red squirrels still live in the Tywi Forest. Dark skies
Longer nights bring some of the darkest skies in Britain. Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) is an International Dark Sky Reserve, the Elan Valley is a Dark Sky Park, and the Cambrian Mountains have very little light on the ground. See our stargazing guide.
Pubs, log fires and local food
Country pubs light the fire when the evenings draw in, farm shops fill with apples, squash and game, and Sunday roasts are back. The season ends with the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Builth Wells on 30 November and 1 December 2026. See autumn food and drink and cosy stays with log burners.
Half term, Halloween and festivals
