About

Discover One of Wales’ Most Scenic Railway Journeys

Step aboard the Brecon Mountain Railway for a spectacular journey through the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).

Departing from Pant, just three miles north of Merthyr Tydfil, the railway follows part of the historic Brecon & Merthyr Railway, a former mainline route that originally closed in 1964. Today, beautifully restored heritage trains carry passengers through some of the most dramatic scenery in South Wales.

Your journey takes you through the foothills of the National Park, past the village of Pontsticill and alongside the tranquil Taf Fechan Reservoir, before climbing high into the mountains to Torpantau, the summit of the original railway line.

Scenic Stops and Things to Do

Journey to Torpantau

All trains travel from Pant through the stunning Taf Fechan Valley to Torpantau, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains, woodland and water.

Return Stop at Pontsticill

On the return journey, trains pause at our charming station at Pontsticill where visitors can:

  • Relax in the Lakeside Café with panoramic views across the reservoir

  • Take a scenic walk along the reservoir paths

  • Enjoy the play area for younger visitors

Explore Pant Station

Before or after your journey, take time to explore Pant Station, where you will find:

  • Tearooms serving hot drinks, cakes and light meals

  • Gift shop with railway souvenirs and local gifts

  • Workshop viewing area, where you can often see locomotives and carriages being maintained

  • Picnic area with beautiful views across the valley

Dog Friendly

Dogs are welcome to travel on the railway for a small additional fee, and assistance dogs travel free of charge.

Whether you're visiting the National Park, exploring South Wales or simply looking for a relaxing day out, the Brecon Mountain Railway offers a unique way to experience the landscapes, heritage and atmosphere of one of Wales’ most beautiful regions.
