About

The village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (abbreviated to Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG) is best known for the much longer version of its name - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Invented in the 1860s for the name of the railway station, this translates as "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave".

The village developed as a result of the construction of Thomas Telford's new road to Holyhead in the 1820s and the arrival of the railway crossing at Britannia Bridge at the beginning of the 1850s.Today the village has a population of approximately 3,100

The major attractions in the village are James Pringle Weavers World of Shopping and, of course, the station with the long name!
